The VX and HX are among the most fuel-efficient Honda Civic models, although the VX can be particularly hard to find. ![]() 2012 marks the return of the HF designation. The power-to-weight ratio that delivers excellent gas mileage can be easily raised with an engine swap that delivers remarkable times in the quarter mile. Part of the secret behind the the high-MPG HF models is their low weight … the HF cars are lighter than their stable mates making them particularly attractive for the drag racing crowd. The Civic CRX HF of the late 1980s is in particularly high demand from Honda enthusiasts and prices can be quite elevated, given the model year. While the current Civic Hybrid’s performance can’t match the Si, its gas mileage figures are quite respectable at 44 combined. Today’s Civic Hybrid, on the other hand, uses a much smaller 1.3 liter gasoline engine in tandem with its electric motor. While not the most miserly with gas, current Civic Si models come with high-performance 2.0 liter engines … a far cry from the tiny 1100cc engines found in the earliest (and equally tiny) Civics. Owning and driving a Civic Hybrid is just like life with a regular Civic, almost. The most extreme is the Hybrid sedan, which gets up to 51 mpg with help from an electric motor that never needs to be plugged in. Three specialized Civics are designed specifically to minimize environmental impact and deliver better fuel economy than all but a few cars currently available. All provide superb comfort for front-seat passengers. The Si hatchback is the flagship performance model, and a favorite among young enthusiast drivers for good reason. Up-level Civics come with powerful VTEC engines that deliver brisk acceleration. ![]() All are notable for their excellent fuel economy, free-revving engines and solid handling, including the electrically assisted Hybrid. There are a couple of new paint colors and a Special Edition package at the high end of the line-up. Measured by the hardware, little has changed on the Civic for 2005. Efficient, practical, affordable, polished and pleasant to drive, if not downright fun, with a reputation for reliability: These are the Honda Civic's hallmarks, and nothing about the 2005 model suggests anything has changed.
